COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Christian legal group based in Washington has given a Colorado Springs middle school principal an Oct. 19 deadline to lift a ban on visible Catholic rosaries or face a federal lawsuit.
The Gazette of Colorado Springs reports an announcement over the intercom Sept. 30 at Mann Middle School advised students that religious jewelry may not be visibly displayed.
Colorado Springs District 11 spokeswoman Elaine Naleski says that rule applies only to rosaries because some southern Colorado gangs use it as a unity symbol.
Ed White, an attorney at the American Center for Law & Justice in Washington, says the case involves punishment for religious expression and is threatening to sue on behalf of a 13-year-old student.
