FORT COLLINS — Firefighters said Sunday they had contained a small grass fire west of Fort Collins that forced some residents to briefly leave their homes.

Larimer County sheriff spokeswoman Kathy Messick said firefighters were mopping up the blaze Sunday morning and that residents had returned to their homes.

No structures were threatened, fire officials said.

The fire was reported just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, and it is unknown how it began.

The fire burned about 12 acres.
