BOULDER, Colo.—The University of Colorado regents have postponed voting on a 4 percent cap on in-state tuition increases for next year.

The Daily Camera reports the regents voted 5-4 Wednesday to delay action. CU administrators have filed a request with the state to raise tuition by up 9.5 percent, saying it would leave options open if state funding keeps declining.

The regents who proposed a tighter cap voiced concern about the effects of bigger increases on students.

But CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano has said now isn’t the best time to decide tuition levels because the state budget is still uncertain.

University leaders are bracing for a $77 million shortfall in the next budget.
