LOS ANGELES — UCLA suspended receiver Josh Smith and F-back Morrell Presley for the Bruins’ next game — Oct. 21 at Oregon — for violating team rules.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel announced the suspensions Tuesday before the start of the Bruins’ bye week practices. He didn’t specify the reason for the suspensions, citing student privacy laws.

Smith is the Bruins’ top kick returner, averaging 27.4 yards on 14 kickoff returns. The junior, who transferred to UCLA from the University of Colorado in 2009, also caught three passes and rushed for 74 yards in UCLA’s first six games.

Carta-Samuels set to return

LARAMIE — Wyoming quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, who missed last weekend’s 45-0 loss at TCU because of an undisclosed injury, is clear to play Saturday against Utah.

Without being specific, Carta-Samuels said his absence was “strictly a medical thing.”

Footnotes.

Florida coach Urban Meyer partially reinstated receiver Chris Rainey a month after the junior was suspended following his arrest on an aggravated stalking charge. Rainey won’t play Saturday night against Mississippi State but could be back on the field against Georgia on Oct. 30.

• Georgia tailback Caleb King, the team’s second-leading rusher, was suspended for two games following his arrest for failure to appear in court for a speeding ticket.

• Southern Miss linebacker Martez Smith is out for the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during Saturday’s 44-43 loss to East Carolina.

• Notre Dame junior tight end Kyle Rudolph needs season-ending surgery after severely injuring his hamstring.

• Penn State safety Nick Sukay is out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle.

• Washington State coach Paul Wulff suspended linebackers Jamal Atofau and Andre Barrington, who were arrested after Pullman police found 38 marijuana plants growing in the house the players and two other people rented.
