Warren Washington, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, is one of 10 researchers who will receive the prestigious National Medal of Science.

Washington, with NCAR since the early 1960s, is a pioneer for using computer models to study Earth’s climate.

Atmospheric computer models were used in the 2007 assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for which Washington and other scientists shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

As the second African-American to earn an atmospheric sciences doctorate, Washington has served as a role model for generations of researchers.
