SAN MARTIN, Calif. — Rocco Mediate holed out a pitching wedge from 111 yards on the par-5 15th hole for his third eagle of the week, and finished with a 4-under-par 67 to maintain a three-stroke lead Saturday at the Open.
Mediate, looking for his first PGA Tour victory in eight years, became the first player to make three eagles in a tournament since Tiger Woods in the 1998 Sprint International. Mediate had a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole Thursday and holed out from 160 yards Friday on the par-4 fourth hole. He had a 17-under 196 total.
Bo Van Pelt was second after a 65, Alex Prugh (66) and Ryuji Imada (69) were five strokes back.
• Michele Redman holed out from 126 yards for an eagle on the par-4 18th hole for a 4-under 68 and a share of the third-round lead at the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in Danville, Calif., with Spain’s Beatriz Recari (70) and South Korea’s Ilhee Lee (68).
Redman, who had a double bogey on the par-3 16th, hit an 8-iron approach that landed 16 feet from the pin, then rolled into the cup.
• Pablo Martin of Spain shot a 9-under 63 to take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura.
NFL plans to meet with Favre
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said a league official will meet with Brett Favre this week as part of an investigation into allegations the quarterback sent racy text messages and lewd photos to a Jets game hostess in 2008 when he played for New York.
Goodell, interviewed at halftime of the Western Michigan-Notre Dame game, said someone “from our staff” would meet with the Minnesota Vikings quarterback and three-time league MVP.
• The New York Giants signed kicker Shayne Graham because of the left ankle injury Lawrence Tynes suffered practicing kickoffs.
Klitschko retains his title
HAMBURG, Germany — Vitali Klitschko dominated Shannon Briggs for 12 brutal rounds to retain his WBC heavyweight title with a unanimous decision.
The Ukrainian champ (41-2) controlled the action but couldn’t knock down the American challenger, who dropped to 51-6-1.
“I could not believe he was still standing after taking so many punches,” Klitschko said. “He’s got a huge heart.”
Federer, Murray meet in final
SHANGHAI — Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4 to set up a match with Andy Murray in the final of the Shanghai Masters.
With the win, Federer will regain the No. 2 ranking he lost when he was beaten by the Serb in the U.S. Open semifinals in September.
Murray beat Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
Purdue’s Hummel hurt again
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue star forward Robbie Hummel will miss the upcoming college basketball season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in practice.
It’s the same knee he injured Feb. 24, knocking him out for the remainder of last season.
