CHAMA, N.M.—A group of more than a dozen private landowners are forming a new alliance to address land management issues in the San Juan Mountains of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.
The Chama Peak Landowner Alliance was launched Monday morning in Chama.
Members of the alliance say they represent about 200,000 acres from the headwaters of the Navajo River in Colorado to the Brazos headwaters and Rio Nutrias in New Mexico’s Rio Arriba County.
The Jicarilla Apache Nation is also participating in the alliance.
Organizers say the goal is to keep the region intact and economically viable by enhancing the ecosystem and its wildlife. They list threats that include poorly planned energy development and population pressures.
