The L.A. Live complex, developed by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz, was one of two projects in the U.S. to receive a Global Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute last week.

L.A. Live is a 5 million-square-foot sports, residential and entertainment district developed by Los Angeles-based AEG in an underdeveloped area of the city. The $2.5 billion project hosts live sports, concerts, telecasts, shows and corporate events.

The Urban Land Institute noted the project’s market success, saying it “has transformed a stretch of underused land in downtown Los Angeles into a vibrant, 24-hour sports, residential and entertainment district and stimulated the development of more than 2,500 housing units, a grocery store, and dozens of restaurants, cafes and other exciting clubs and venues.”

The second project honored was Thin Flats, a green-energy development in Philadelphia.
