Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday introduced a new version of its Internet-based software for messaging and e-mail, combining it with Web versions of word-processing and spreadsheet applications. The software, available next year, is called Office 365 and will carry a monthly price of as little as $2 per user, Microsoft said. For the first time, a version for larger businesses comes with an option to get the full package of Office apps for a monthly subscription fee.

Microsoft aims to fend off competition from Google’s business software as more companies look to let workers use programs hosted on the Web and delivered through a browser.
