DENVER—The official race for Denver mayor is still a year away but a city councilman is already indicating he will run for the office.

KMGH-TV reports that Denver City Councilman Doug Linkhart announced his candidacy Wednesday. The office will be up for grabs November 2011 but Denver could have a new mayor before then if Mayor John Hickenlooper is elected Colorado governor next month.

Hickenlooper is facing Republican Dan Maes and Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo.

James Mejia, executive director of the Denver Preschool Program, has also said he intends to run for mayor.
