CHAMA, N.M.—Gov. Bill Richardson is directing the state Transportation Department to use up to $1.1 million to help repair a railroad trestle that burned on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad line that runs between New Mexico and Colorado.

Railroad officials have said repairs to the Lobato Trestle could cost around $2 million.

The governor’s office says the Transportation Department will use federal funds meant for the restoration of historic rail trestle bridges.

The State Transportation Commission will approve the funding as part of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan.

Richardson says the Chama community depends on regular service of the historic railroad, and he’s committed to helping residents.

The trestle, just north of Chama, dates back to 1883. It is the second highest trestle on the 64-mile line.
