SEOUL, South Korea — Authorities said Wednesday that they had arrested a North Korean spy who had been on a mission to assassinate the highest-ranking North Korean official ever to defect.
Hwang Jang-Yop, 87, was found dead in his bathtub here 10 days ago. News reports said the authorities had concluded that he had died after suffering heart failure while bathing and then inhaling water.
Authorities have maintained Hwang died of natural causes and said that the death and the arrest are not linked.
