FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The Interior Department has chosen Colorado State University as a regional climate science center.

The selection was announced Thursday.

CSU says the center will research regional issues such as the effects of pine beetle outbreaks and whether dust from overgrazed areas accelerates snowmelt.

The center will have up to eight federal scientists and several postdoctoral fellows. It’s expected to start in early 2011.

CSU will lead a research coalition including universities in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. Some federal agencies are also included.

Other regional climate centers will be in Alaska, Arizona, North Carolina and Washington. Three others haven’t been announced yet.
