TRENTON, N.J. — The cost of building a rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York City is estimated at $9.77 billion, about $4 billion less than the worst-case estimate the governor of New Jersey cited when he canceled the project two weeks ago, three government officials said Thursday.
The officials, who have direct knowledge of the tunnel but are not authorized to speak publicly about it, said Gov. Chris Christie was given the revised cost estimate after he pulled the plug on the massive public works project, citing runaway costs. Christie’s office declined to comment on the revised estimate.
