FORT COLLINS, Colo.—An autopsy on a Colorado State University student who died this week show she had a bacterial infection.

The Larimer County coroner’s office said Friday that the official cause of Christina Adame’s death was Waterhouse-Friderichsen Syndrome. Deputy coroner Louis Greek said the condition happens when a type of bacteria attacks the body’s adrenal glands, part of the body’s immune system.

Officials originally suspected that Adame had meningitis. The bacteria that infected her can attack the brain and cause meningitis but that didn’t happen in her case.
