RIFLE, Colo.—A police officer in Rifle is recovering after he was shot while investigating a domestic violence report.
The suspect is in critical condition.
Police Chief Daryl Meisner says the suspect opened fire on two officers Friday night, injuring one. He says the other officer then shot the suspect.
Meisner identified the suspect as 53-year-old Phillip Michael Amonette. He is in custody on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, with bond set at $1 million. He was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday.
Garfield County sheriff’s spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis says the injured officer, who is in his 20s, was in good condition.
Police have turned their investigation over to sheriff’s officials.
