GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Federal land managers have rounded up 73 wild horses in a two-week operation in western Colorado.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports that three horses died during the Bureau of Land Management roundup between the towns of Rangely and Meeker, about 60 miles north of Grand Junction.
Authorities say two horses were euthanized for chronic conditions or injuries. A third died while it was being roped, and officials say it had a heart condition.
BLM spokesman David Boyd says the rate of horse deaths directly attributable to roundups is usually less than 1 percent.
The BLM had estimated the roundup would cost about $500,000.
It ended Thursday.
