For the record: New Mexico is 0-7 overall, 0-3 in the Mountain West after losing 30-20 at home against much-improved San Diego State and Aztecs defensive coordinator Rocky Long, a former Lobos head coach.
Streaking: New Mexico has lost eight straight since beating CSU, winless last year in the MWC, in Albuquerque.
Who’s hot: Tight end Lucas Reed showed up with a career- best 95 yards on five catches and scored two touchdowns. He goes against a Rams defense that now ranks last nationally in pass efficiency defense.
Who’s not: Pretty much the whole team. New Mexico joins Akron as the only FBS teams without a win. The Lobos rank last nationally in scoring defense, allowing 44.1 points per game. New Mexico has gone through three quarterbacks, including freshman Stump Godfrey.
Key stat: New Mexico brings up the caboose of the MWC in nine categories.
FYI: This is a battle for the MWC basement, with the loser almost certainly finishing at the bottom of the pile. . . . Reed said the Lobos saw the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel against San Diego State.
