Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam winner, won his 50th match of the year Friday. He became only the fifth man, and the first since Sampras, to win 50 matches in at least nine straight years in the Open era.

FINA looking into Crippen’s death

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A day after U.S. national team swimmer Fran Crippen died during an open-water race, the winner of the event said the water and air temperatures were too high to hold a competition.

Thomas Lurz of Germany criticized both swimming’s governing body and race organizers, saying conditions were too hot for racing.

FINA president Julio Maglione said “overexertion” led to Crippen’s death and FINA had launched an investigation into the tragedy.
