FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Office Depot’s chairman and chief executive, Steve Odland, will resign, the Boca Raton, Fla.-based international office-supply retailer announced Monday. The resignation, effective Nov. 1, is by “mutual agreement” with the board of directors, according to an Office Depot news release.

Odland’s resignation comes after last week’s disclosure that the company agreed to pay more than $1 million in penalties to settle a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation. The SEC charged that Office Depot improperly shared information with selected analysts and major investors in 2007.
