Denver coach Josh McDaniels has apologized for his and his team’s — embarrassing 59-14 performance against the despised Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
Next, maybe the Bronco organization should give ticket holders a refund. Bronco fans — the customers — deserve better.
If you purchased a hoodie at a store only to find it had no sleeves, you’d demand a refund, wouldn’t you? Why should Bronco fans pay for a team with no heart?
Orange-clad fans began streaming out of Invesco Field at Mile High — a house built by taxpayers — in the second quarter of Sunday’s game, an unimaginable scene in a city that once had such a crush on its team.
The young, arrogant, overconfident coach seems to have lost his team, and now he’s losing the fans.
Indifference has settled into apountry. The only thing worse than angry fans are indifferent fans who find more meaningful ways to spend autumn Sundays in beautiful Colorado.
Bronco fans have invested millions in their team, and taxpayers (including non-fans) have spent millions trying to keep the team competitive. But since starting last season an improbable 6-0, McDaniels has gone a jaw-dropping 4-13. He will be judged, and rightly so, on how he and his team respond to Black Sunday, the worst home drubbing since 1963.
McDaniels has alienated or tossed overboard the top players brought into the program by previous coach Mike Shanahan, and his ability to pick and lead new talent is questionable. Many rightly wonder whether he has the goods to get it done in Denver. Only time will tell, but time is running out.
If only his win total matched his bravado.
