Republican leaders have said that lawmakers next year will almost certainly change state rules and allow the GOP to avoid being deemed a “minor party” should its candidate in the governor’s race fail to crack 10 percent Nov. 2.
But it’s unclear whether Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Hickenlooper would sign off on that law change, if elected. Hickenlooper, through a spokesman, declined to say whether he favors the plan to safeguard Republicans’ status and political fundraising abilities.
“We’re focused on making sure Coloradans get out and vote,” said spokesman George Merritt.
Minor-party status would cut in half the amount many Republican candidates could raise in political donations and forfeit guaranteed top billing for Republicans on ballots.
