James Keith Sack was sentenced to 36 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of his wife in their Littleton apartment last November.

Sack, 38, called 911 and reported that he had killed his wife, 26-year-old Yesenia Avila.

When police arrived, they found Sack lying “bleeding and incoherent” on top of his wife. He had also stabbed himself several times.

Sack pleaded guilty Sept. 2 to second-degree murder and second-degree assault. According to prosecutors, he stabbed his wife with a 10-inch filet knife because she was considering leaving him.

The Jefferson County district attorney’s office sought a 60-year sentence.

Prosecutor Tim Lane called the murder “cold, intentional and without justification.” The Denver Post
