NEW CASTLE, Colo.—Rescuers say three hunters who spent four frigid nights stranded near the Flattops Wilderness did everything right to help them survive.
The unidentified Denver-area men had slight hypothermia and were hungry and thirsty when search teams reached them Wednesday.
They built a fire in a break in the trees and stayed there after becoming separated from the rest of their hunting party Saturday, before a blizzard moved in.
The president of Garfield County Search & Rescue, Mike Alsdorf, told The Daily Sentinel that they only had a day’s worth of food and were right to hunker down.
The men fired three shots before nightfall on Monday and Tuesday, a distress call indicating they were still out there.
