A man was fatally shot Wednesday night in northeast Denver, police said.

The shooting happened at about 9:30 p.m. near Bruce Randolph Avenue and York Street, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Paul Cortez, and the shooter argued in a nearby convenience store and the verbal confrontation lead to the shooting, Jackson said.

Police did not release details on the shooter, who remains at large.

Cortez was shot “several” times, police said, and was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Jackson said.

Police ask that anyone with information on the incident call them at 720 913-2000 or call Crime Stoppers at 720 913-STOP (7867).

Tipsters can also send an e-mail to or text to CRIMES (274637) then title DMCS and enter a message.

Information leading to an arrest and charges could lead to a $2,000 reward.
