A 45-year-old man was convicted Thursday of rape and kidnapping in three attacks committed between 1993 and 1995, authorities say.

A Denver jury found Byron Gay guilty of two counts of kidnapping, six counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of aggravated first-degree sexual assault and one count of third-degree sexual assault, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney’s office.

The conviction was the result of work by Denver’s Cold Case Project, Kimbrough said.

The attacks began in June 1993. Prosecutors said Gay struck again in September 1995 and the next month.

In each case, prosecutors said, Gay broke into a woman’s home and attacked his victim while she was sleeping.

The cases were unsolved until a detective with the Denver Police Department’s Cold Case Unit reviewed the cases and was able to link Gay to the attacks through DNA.
