INDIANAPOLIS — Rather than banning summer basketball recruiting just yet, the NCAA’s Board of Directors wants to take a longer look before making any changes.

On Thursday, the committee voted to support a year-long study into the summer recruiting period rather than moving forward with a proposal from the Collegiate Commissioners Association that would have banned summer recruiting.

Some coaches were very upset about the proposal. It’s a pivotal evaluation time for coaches, who travel to various summer camps and clinics over two 10-day stretches of scouting trips.

• Louisville forward Jared Swopshire, who averaged 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds last season, is out indefinitely with a groin injury.

Kaymer could overtake Woods

SOTOGRANDE, Spain — Spain’s Pablo Larazabal shot a 5-under- par 66 to take the first-round lead in the Andalucia Masters, while Germany’s Martin Kaymer struggled in his attempt to overtake Tiger Woods in the world rankings.

Kaymer needs to win or finish in a second-place tie with no more than one other player to supplant Woods at No. 1. Kaymer shot a first-round 72, leaving him six shots off the pace and tied for 28th.

Ricky Barnes shot an 8-under 63 to take the lead after the first round of the inaugural Asia Pacific Classic in Selangor, Malaysia, the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in Southeast Asia.

Ryan Moore (64) trails by one stroke, while Carl Pettersson (65) was two back along with Brian Davis and Charlie Wi.

Super Saver to stand at stud

VERSAILLES, Ky. — Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver was retired because of concern over bone bruises in his legs and will become a stud horse.

Super Saver and jockey Calvin Borel romped in the slop at Churchill Downs on May 1, beating Ice Box by 2 1/2 lengths to give trainer Todd Pletcher his first Derby win.

A shot at the first Triple Crown in more than 30 years disappeared two weeks later at the Preakness, when he faded to eighth.

Wozniacki will finish year No. 1

DOHA, Qatar — Caroline Wozniacki wrapped up the year-end No. 1 ranking after rallying to beat Francesca Schiavone of Italy 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the WTA Championships.

The 20-year-old Dane is the 10th woman to end the season on top and the youngest since Martina Hingis in 1997. She replaced the injured Serena Williams at the top earlier this month and has won more titles (six) and more matches (61) than any other player in 2010.
