Lower-than-average precipitation for the past three months has left the forest and grassland outside of Boulder primed for fire.
Since Aug. 1, Boulder has received just 2.26 inches of rain.
The average precipitation over those three months is 5.14 inches, according to Matt Kelsch, a meteorologist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder.
And Boulder can’t expect any relief in the immediate future.
“There’s a front coming in Sunday night, Monday morning,” Kelsch said. “That might bring a little bit of rain, but it’s actually quite unlikely.
“And we’re getting kind of late in the year without our first snow,” he said.
