COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—U.S. rower Evangelos Tsourtsoulas has tested positive for banned substances and his results from a competition this month were disqualified.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Friday that Tsourtsoulas’ urine sample came back positive for formoterol and budesonide at the Senior World Championship Trials on Oct. 1. The substances are often found in asthma medication.

Athletes may use prohibited substances provided there is a valid medical need and they are granted an exemption. Tsourtsoulas did not have one, but the 25-year-old from Caldwell, N.J., later requested one and received it.
