
Physical education teacher Bill Youmans wants his students to get excited about staying fit. So he encouraged fifth-graders to sign up for Vail Resorts’ free ski program. Now, the kids can get excited about meeting an Olympic champion.
Vail Resorts runs the School of Shred Program. The program allows fifth and sixth graders to have four free ski days at each of the mountains under Vail Resorts including one complimentary beginner lesson and rental equipment.
Devinny Elementary in Lakewood had the highest participation rate of any school winning the visit from Lindsey Vonn who won gold and bronze medals in the 2010 Winter Olympics on top of winning the World Cup title three years in a row.
At Devinny, Vonn led two separate assemblies for students 3rd grade and older. Vonn talked to the kids about the importance of getting good exercise especially during the winter months.
“The School of Shred is a really great program and a great way for kids to start skiing at a young age,” said Vonn. “And, I think sports in general are really great for young kids.”
