DENVER—Workers digging trenches have unearthed three complete skeletons at Denver’s Cheesman Park, a not uncommon occurrence for workers at what used to be a 19th century cemetery.

Colorado Designscapes Inc. project manager Doug Gibbs told station KMGH-TV that workers unearthed the skeletons last week during construction of an irrigation system.

The wood caskets have decomposed, leaving only skeletons and metal hardware.

More than 4,200 of Denver’s earliest residents were buried in Protestant City Cemetery, which became Cheesman Park in central Denver in the 1890s.

Chief Deputy Coroner Michelle Weiss-Samaras says the remains will be reburied. Fifty-four remains were found in 2008 during construction of a parking structure at the nearby Denver Botanic Gardens.
