DENVER—Colorado’s medical marijuana industry is getting involved in electoral politics.

A review by The Denver Post found that medical marijuana advocates and business owners have contributed about $10,000 to candidates. About $2,000 came from Josh Stanley, the owner of the Budding Health dispensary in Denver.

Most of the candidates who picked up the donations are Democrats, including state Sens. Chris Romer and Pat Steadman, who backed new regulations for the industry.

Activists also sponsored a fundraiser for Democratic attorney general candidate Stan Garnett. The Boulder County district attorney says he wants to minimize federal prosecutions of people involved in medical marijuana.
