DENVER—Republican Scott Gessler is Colorado’s new Secretary of State after defeating Democratic incumbent Bernie Buescher.

Gessler is a private election law attorney from Denver who will serve a four-year term after his victory Tuesday. He won 50 to 43 percent with 95 percent of the projected vote counted by Wednesday.

Gov. Bill Ritter appointed Buescher secretary of state in 2008 after Republican Mike Coffman was elected to Congress. Buescher was the first Democratic Colorado secretary of state since 1963.

Gessler is a former federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C. He also managed his family construction’s company.

Buescher is a former state representative from Grand Junction who lost his seat before his appointment.
