DENVER—Republican Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has won a second term in office.
Suthers defeated Democrat and Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett in Tuesday’s election. Suthers was appointed attorney general in 2005 when Ken Salazar won an open seat in the U.S. Senate. He won his first full term as attorney general in 2006.
Suthers had been the lone statewide elected Republican in the state’s executive branch the past four years.
Garnett jumped into the race after Suthers joined other attorneys general in a lawsuit challenging the federal health care overhaul.
Suthers’ career includes eight years as El Paso County district attorney, two years as executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections and four years as U.S. Attorney.
