A 20-year-old inmate in the El Paso County jail died early Thursday morning after his cellmate reported him coughing and choking.
Guards were called to the cell of Ricardo Rafel Grimaldo at about 4:43 a.m. Despite emergency medical efforts he died less than an hour later at Memorial Hospital, the Sheriff’s Department stated this afternoon.
The cause of death hasn’t been determined, and authorities are awaiting toxicology reports.
Grimaldo was booked into the jail Aug. 22 after he was arrested by Colorado Springs police on charges of second-degree burglary and theft by receiving.
He was being held on $10,000 bond.
