Detectives say they’ve recovered a full DNA profile that they believe belongs to the man who assaulted Boulder police Sgt. Jim Byfield on University Hill last month.

The department has entered the profile into the database that collects DNA from offenders nationwide and can compare those profiles with evidence collected at crime scenes. The DNA from Byfield’s attack hasn’t hit a match in the database yet, but Sgt. Tom Trujillo said he believes a new law allowing authorities to take DNA from suspected felons — not just those convicted — could lead to an arrest.

“I think the new law will help us,” Trujillo said, adding that police aren’t releasing details about where they found the DNA at the crime scene because it’s part of their investigation.

In his first time talking publicly about the assault since it happened, Byfield, with his arm in a sling Thursday, said he expects to make a full recovery and be back at work — on light duty — as early as next week.
