COMMERCE CITY, Colo.—Authorities say a large area in Commerce City was evacuated because of chemicals leaking from barrels at an abandoned plant.

Adams County Sheriff’s Sgt. Candi Baker says emergency crews responded Friday afternoon after reports of odors in the area north of Denver. She says they found several leaking barrels in what is thought to be an abandoned chemical plant.

The chemicals were identified as petroleum products. Baker says the amounts are small and aren’t an immediate threat.

People were allowed to return to the area around 9 p.m. Friday.

The Red Cross opened an evacuation center at DuPont Elementary School in Commerce City.
