GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Mesa County Commissioner Craig Meis (meese) has been fined following a conviction stemming from a $50 boating ticket and a trial he called his “own personal little tea party.”

A jury convicted Meis Thursday of the petty offense of allowing a person under 16 to operate a motor boat. He was ticketed in June at Highline Lake State Park in northwest Colorado.

An officer says Meis allowed his 14-year-old son to operate a personal watercraft.

The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports that Meis protested the ticket in an email to the director of the state Department of Natural Resources, which oversees state parks.

Meis represented himself at trial and called the officer’s decision to issue the ticket “frivolous.” He was fined $78.
