FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Voter approval of a city sales tax increase in Fort Collins means such services as community centers and transportation for elderly and disabled residents might escape the budget ax.

Voters Tuesday approved raising the sales and use tax by 0.85 percent over the next 10 years. The increase is expected to generate more than $18.7 million a year in additional revenue.

The Coloradoan reports that City Manager Darin Atteberry had recommended cutting $5.4 million in his new budget. He says the tax increase will help ease pressure on the budget and could prevent having to close a city pool and cutting jobs, hours and programs at community centers.

But Atteberry says he’ll still recommend some reductions and moneysaving measures.
