The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to close South Wadsworth Boulevard under West Hampden Avenue at 9 tonight and lasting until 5:30 a.m. Monday, so contractors can demolish a portion of the Hampden bridge over Wadsworth.

The demolition is part of a $40.1 million reconstruction of Hampden in that area.

CDOT spokeswoman Mindy Crane said motorists should expect major delays in the area of the work site over the weekend.

During the closure, drivers on southbound Wadsworth will be detoured on westbound Hampden to South Kipling Parkway and then back on eastbound Hampden to Wadsworth, Crane said.

To similarly skirt the closure, those traveling north on Wadsworth will take eastbound Hampden to South Sheridan Boulevard and then back on westbound Hampden to Wadsworth.

Through traffic on Hampden will be maintained during the Wadsworth closure, Crane said. The entire Hampden improvement project is scheduled for completion by the end of June.

The agency also expects delays on Saturday as contractors realign eastbound and westbound Arapahoe Road at its intersection with Parker Road in Arapahoe County.

The realignment is part of a $32 million project that will construct a grade-separated interchange carrying Parker Road on a bridge over Arapahoe Road. This project is scheduled to be finished in a year.

To complete the realignment of Arapahoe Road, there will be single- and double-lane closures of the road in both eastbound and westbound directions on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Crane said.

“Major delays are possible and alternate routes are strongly advised,” CDOT said.

On Monday and Tuesday nights, contractors on RTD’s West Corridor light-rail project will close all lanes of West 6th Avenue at Simms Street and Union Boulevard so workers can tension cables on the new light-rail bridge that crosses 6th just east of the Simms/Union interchange.

Motorists traveling eastbound on 6th can exit at Union to detour around the closure and those driving westbound on 6th should exit at Kipling Street for their detour, said West Corridor project spokeswoman Kathy Berumen.
