DENVER—Fire officials are investigating what caused a fire in an apartment building near Denver that has forced 50 people from their homes.

The fire started Sunday afternoon at a building in the Churchill Downs Apartments in unincorporated Arapahoe County. Half of the building’s 24 units were severely damaged while the rest sustained light to moderate damage.

Cunningham Fire Rescue says arson has been ruled out as a cause, as has fireworks and barbecue grilling. The same building burned in a fire in July 1999 that was sparked by a juvenile playing with fireworks.
