A fire at a southeast Denver apartment building forced about 50 residents to evacuate Sunday afternoon.

The blaze started in a second-floor apartment of the three-story Building 6 at Churchill Downs at Hunters Run.

“It was just a wall of flames that spread to the roof,” said Nick Richter, who lives in an adjacent building.

There were no reports of injuries. The fire took about an hour to bring under control.

The Mile High chapter of the American Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at the Church of the Risen Christ for evacuees. The Red Cross also was making arrangements for pets at a local animal shelter.

The apartments are at 8400 E. Yale Ave. in southeast Denver between the Highline Canal and Cherry Creek Country Club.
