Fire crews battled a southeast Denver apartment house blaze late Sunday, forcing a number of people to evacuate.
The fire started in a second-floor apartment of the three-story Building 6 at Churchill Downs at Hunter’s Run.
“It was just a wall of flames that spread to the roof,” said Nick Richter, who lives in the next building over.
There were no reports of injuries.
The fire was reported at about 3:45 p.m. It took about an hour to bring under control, but dozens of residents from the 24 apartments in the building were awaiting word about their homes as dark set in and fire crews were inspecting the damage and extinguishing hot spots that might ignite.
The Mile High chapter of the American Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at the Church of the Risen Christ for about 50 people evacuated from the building.
The Red Cross also was making arrangements for pets at a local animal shelter.
The apartments are at 8400 E. Yale between the Highline Canal and Cherry Creek Country Club.
The battle also included crews from South Metro Fire Rescue and the Aurora Fire Department.
