DENVER—The remains of a serviceman who died in a Korean prisoner of war camp are being returned to Colorado.
Army Cpl. Floyd Hooper will be buried Saturday in his hometown of Stratton in eastern Colorado. Defense officials say the 27-year-old Hooper was fighting with the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division against Chinese Communist forces in February 1951.
The Defense Department says Hooper was captured Feb. 4, 1951, near Yangp’yong, Korea. Surviving prisoners of war said Hooper was held in a POW camp in Suan County, North Korea, where he died of malnutrition and dysentery.
Defense officials say more than 2,000 U.S. servicemen died as POWs during the Korean War and more than 8,000 are still missing.
