DURANGO, Colo.—Students at Fort Lewis College scrambled to organize a counterprotest after learning that a Kansas-based church planned to picket a film screening on campus.
The Durango Herald reported that more than 1,000 students, faculty and community members turned out Tuesday afternoon for the demonstration in Durango. But no members of the Westboro Baptist Church—infamous for its protests at soldier funerals—showed up.
The church had said it would protest the screening of “The Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue for Hope”, a documentary which features the church.
Durango Mayor Michael Rendon and leaders of the college’s diversity awareness program and the campus’ gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender group led the march.
