DENVER—Colorado lawmakers are questioning a proposed pay increase for Spanish-language court interpreters.
The state court system has proposed paying them $40 an hour, a $10 raise. Budget analysts said Thursday that administrators want to make sure they have sufficient number of Spanish interpreters on hand to comply with new federal requirements.
The state spends $3.4 million a year to provide interpreters for almost every language. The rate for each language varies depending on availability and Spanish interpreters are among the lowest paid.
Lawmakers are trying to cover a $715 million shortfall next year so members of the Joint Budget Committee say they want to know more about what the federal government is demanding.
