BROOMFIELD — A small two-seat helicopter made a crash landing on the football field of Legacy High School in Broomfield just before 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
North Metro Fire Rescue spokeswoman Wendy Forbes said the helicopter was piloted by an adult male and carried an adult male passenger. After having mechanical trouble in the air, the pilot crash-landed.
Forbes said neither man was injured, and it was unclear where they were headed. Their identities were not made public.
The National Transportation Safety Board said that the helicopter took off from Rocky Mountain Regional Airport and that the pilot has had his license since June.
“The pilot said he experienced some coughing and sputtering in the engine,” NTSB investigator Jason Aguilera told 9News. “He didn’t land it as well as he would have liked to have and actually broke the helicopter.”
The helicopter is a Schweitzer 300C, owned by Mountain One Helicopters in Erie.
Jack Ferguson, co-owner and chief pilot for Mountain One Helicopters,told 9News the pilot was renting the aircraft for the evening.
