VAIL, Colo.—Tiny bugs that serve as a measure of the environmental health of Gore Creek through East Vail have been disappearing and officials are asking, “Why?.”

A recent study by the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District found an “unhealthy absence” of mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies on a stretch near where I-70 begins its steep westward climb to Vail Pass.

Officials say those insects are more sensitive to environmental changes and could indicate a problem affecting the health of the creek, which is a popular trout-fishing area.

Water district officials plan to investigate several possibilities, the effect of fertilizers and lawn chemicals, as well as sand placed on I-70 for traction during the winter.
