BOULDER, Colo.—A settlement allowing Xcel Energy to raise electricity rates across the state by $44.5 million to pay for its SmartGridCity project in Boulder could become final on Wednesday.

The project is helping the utility see what a modern energy grid that distributes traditional and renewable energy would look like.

An administrative law judge last month recommended approval for a settlement reached by Xcel, staff for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and the Governor’s Energy Office.

PUC spokesman Terry Bote told the Camera that the settlement would become final Wednesday if no protests are lodge by then.
