DENVER—U.S. Sen. Mark Udall is joining the call for a ban on earmarks in federal spending bills.

The Colorado Democrat’s statement Monday came as Republican leaders in the House and Senate are pledging to end the practice of lawmakers including funding in bills to finance projects in their home states.

Udall says he’s pushed in the past for pay-as-you-go spending and reform of the appropriations process to rein in the deficit. He says he won’t request earmarks, which he calls “a wasteful and influence-laden process.”
